Pemberton:
Tucked beyond the Coast Mountains north of Whistler lies Pemberton Valley, a green pocket of agricultural land widely known for its seed potatoes, and affectionately dubbed "Spud Valley" by locals. The Village of Pemberton is a spectacular 20-minute drive north of Whistler Resort, accessible directly off Highway 99. The Village, located at the foot of majestic Mt Currie, is the hub for the Pemberton Valley and district. Visitors remark upon the beauty of this stretch of peaceful farmland sheltered all around by the majestic snow-capped Coastal Mountains. The rustic village of Pemberton was named for Joseph Despard Pemberton, a surveyor-General for the Hudson`s Bay Company in the 1850s. The original Pemberton Hotel still operates today, adding to the heritage and rustic charm of the area. In the past decade, the pace of tourism has accelerated. Pemberton is experiencing a growth in both visitors and new arrivals that are taking up residence in this agriculturally and recreationally rich valley. Quick access to hiking, climbing, mountain biking, and backcountry ski-touring routes is one of the main reasons for the surge in popularity. Very little activity is centred in the small town. Salish First Nations people were the first to call this area their home when they settled at the foot of majestic Mount Currie and the head of Lillooet Lake. This is the traditional territory of the Lil`wat Nation, who today is headquartered in Mount Currie and D`Arcy, with smaller communities sprinkled along Lillooet Lake. From the time of their first contact with Europeans, the Lil`wat has always been characterized by their friendliness towards visitors. Be sure to take the time to enjoy the stunning alpine lakes and waterfalls, camping, fishing, and wildlife. Located north of Whistler, is the gateway to the interior of British Columbia. Logging, ranching and farming are the main industries of the community, which it is also becoming more of a resort town with all service facilities. Pemberton Valley is the perfect destination for outdoor adventures from llama treks and golf to fishing and glider. Visit the Pemberton Museum with gold rush exhibits. Enjoy Nairn Falls Provincial Park where you can go camping, hiking and fishing. Visit east of Pemberton on Hwy 99 the Mount Currie, the busy heart of the Mount Currie Reserve of the Lil`wat group of the Stl`atl`lmx Nation. 70 km (42 mi) past Mount Currie visit Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park and enjoy fishing and wildlife watching. Pemberton and district offers world-class activities and recreation including snowmobiling, horseback riding, and skiing, golfing, hiking, rafting, jet boating and gliding. The district also provides a variety of shopping, dining, accommodations, and a thriving service and light industrial sector. The area abounds with natural beauty surrounded by three of the most beautiful Provincial Parks in BC.
